The University of Delhi (DU) is a central university located at Delhi, India and is funded by Government of India. Established in 1922, it offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level.

The University was established in the year 1922, with just three colleges under its umbrella namely St. Stephens College (founded in 1881), Hindu College (founded in 1899) and Ramjas College (founded in 1917).

With more than 80 colleges under its umbrella, the University of Delhi, better known as DU, is definitely the most prestigious universities in the country today. The varsity is known for its high standards in teaching and research. The university has been ranked one of the best universities in the world.

Multi Campus Concept

In an effort to cope with this enormous expansion, the University in the early seventies initiated a new organizational pattern based on the multi-campus concept. The South Campus made a beginning in 1973 by starting postgraduate programmes in some departments of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in a rented building. The campus acquired land near Dhaula Kuan where the building of Arts Faculty was first constructed. Offices and teaching activities shifted to this campus in 1983. A beginning has been made towards establishing the East and West Campuses of the University. The East Campus is being developed with the University College of Medical Science as its nucleus, while the West Campus will have as its focus on Engineering and Technology. When the University Grants Commission started establishing Centres of Advanced Studies in the country, 6 were awarded to the University of Delhi out of a total of 18 such centres in the early sixties.

Delhi University in India is noted for its giving quality education. It is administered by prominent figures in the country. Many students have been dying to enter in a university as prestigious as Delhi University.

The University is known for its high standards in teaching and research. It is a state university that was established in the year 1922. It is now designated as one of India’s Federal Universities and it has also developed into a teaching and affiliating body.

It has an environment suited for a quality education. Students have a wide variety choice of different courses. The University has one of the largest numbers of Centers of Advanced Studies that was being recognized by the UGC. These centers includes: the fields of Botany, Chemistry, Economics, Physics, Sociology, and Zoology. The faculty has also excellent academic and research contributions. The NGC also viewed that its Department in of Anthropology, Buddhist Studies, Philosophy, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, English, Financial Studies, Geography, Geology, Genetics, History, Law, Linguistics, Mathematics, Music, Plant Molecular Biology, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics are outstanding academic accomplishments.

It is a campus of open learning. The university set up a life long learning that would have a major responsibility of training teachers, developing courses and curricula and the development of e-learning materials and delivery systems. In the last few years the number of students that are enrolled in the University was getting higher and higher. Nonetheless, this does not stop the university from improving initiatives to increase their seats to more than 55 percent. The University of Delhi has three school terms.

The University is very much concern about their students’ welfare. It has facilities that would make their students much comfortable during their stay in the University. The buildings in the university are built in timely fashion with unique artistry. DU has a Culture Council that hosts workshops and cultural festivals. It also finances other cultural programs in different colleges. It is very supportive in improving cultural activities in the University. Students that belong to different culture wouldn’t feel being left out.

Delhi University grants scholarships to deserving students and to those who can not afford to finance their students. Just like any other universities it also has certain requirements and rules regarding scholarship programs.

The different amenities in the University includes: Buss Pass Counter, Coffee House, Computer Center, Cooperative Store that are run by the university employees, The Gandhi Bhawan, Garden Committee, Internet Access Facility, Post Office, Railway Reservation Counter, State Bank, University Guest House, University Press, University Science instrumentation Center and WUS Health Center.

The University has recent initiatives in Academic Reforms, Restructuring of Academic Programs, and Improvements in Admission procedure, Library Systems, Academic Infrastructure, Mobilization Resources, Restoration of Heritage Buildings, International Relationships, Social and Utility Spaces, New Department and Faculties, Campus Environment, Residences and many more.
