Kendriya Vidyalaya, is a system of Central government schools under the Human resources ministry of the Government of India.

The system came into being in 1965 ,named as “Central Schools”, and has been affiliated to CBSE since then. It served the children of people in the defence services who were often posted to remote places. With the army starting its own Army Public Schools, the service was extended (but not restricted to) to all central government employees. The uniform curriculum followed by these schools all over India ensured that the children of government employees do not face educational difficulties when the parents are transferred.

The name was later changed from “Central School” to “Kendriya Vidyalaya”.

Objectives

* To cater to the educational needs of the children of transferable Central Government employees including Defence and Para-Military personnel by providing a common programme of education;

* To pursue excellence and set pace in the field of school education;

* To initiate and promote experimentation and innovativeness in education in collaboration with other bodies like the Central Board of Secondary Education and National Council of Educational Research and Training etc.

* To develop the spirit of national integration and create a sense of “Indianness” among children.

* Common text-books and bilingual medium of instructions for all Kendriya Vidyalayas.

* All Kendriya Vidyalayas affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education

* All Kendriya Vidyalayas are co-educational, composite schools.

* Sanskrit is taught from class VI to VIII and optional as main subject in IX & X.

Schools Outside India

There are 4 K. V. schools outside India in Kathmandu, Moscow, Tehran and Kuwait. These are intended for children of Indian Embassy staff and other expatriate Indian central government employees.
